Answers:
1) How old do I have to be to obtain my Driver’s License?
  • You can obtain a provisional driver’s license if you are 16 years of age.
  • If you are 18 years or older, you may test for the Driver’s License

2) How old do I have to be to get my Learner's Permit ?
  • Be at least 15 ½, but under 18 years of age

If you are over 17 ½ but under 18 years of age, you may get your permit without the driver education and driver training certificates however, you will not be able to take the driving test until you turn 18.

3) How Do I obtain my Learner's Permit?
  • You must be at least 15 ½ years of age
  • You must test at your local Department of Motor Vehicles Office.
  • The passing score must be a minimum of 85%. There are a total of 46 questions. In order to pass, you need to have at least 39 correct answers.
  • In order to test, you must provide the DMV with:
    • An original complete DMV application (Form # DL44 Link), signed by your legal guardian o Submit a certificate of completion of Driver’s Education Class (Form DL 387 or OL 237)
    • Proof of being enrolled in a Drivers Training (behind the wheel) program. o Birth Certificate and legal presence o Social Security Card (it will be verified with the Social Security Administration’s Office)
    • An application fee of $25.00 ( You will be allowed to test three times within a 12 month period. The fee pays for your Driver’s Permit and Driver’s License)
  • The DMV will:
    • Take your picture o A thumbprint o Take and pass a vision exam

5) Is the Test very difficult?
  • No. But there is no substitute for practice.
  • Try taking a sample test by clicking here: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/interactive/tdrive/exam.htm
  • You have three chances to pass the test. If you fail, you must wait 7 days before taking it again. 
  • Allow sufficient time as the DMV stops administering tests at 4:30 p.m.

9) My parent's work, will your instructor's pick me up for my Behind the Wheel Lessons?
Yes, your instructor will pick you up from either home or school for your lessons if you live or go to school within our service area.

10) Are the Instructor's Licensed?
  • Yes, all of our instructors are licensed by the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • They are finger printed
  • And the DMV completes a background check with the Dept of Justice.

11) What are the restrictions on my provisional Learner's Permit?
  • Minors may use the provisional permit to practice with a parent, guardian, spouse, or an adult 25 years of age or older, who has a valid California driver license. 
  • The person must be close enough to take control of the vehicle at any time.
  • A provisional permit does not let you drive alone -- not even to a DMV office to take a driving test.

12) How long is my Provisional Learner's Permit valid for?
Until you turn 18, unless it is suspended or revoked.

13) How do I go about getting my Provisional Driver's License
  • Prove that you completed both driver education and driver training (DMV forms: DL 387, DL 388, DL 388A, OL 237, or OL 238)
  • Have your driver’s permit for a minimum of 6 months before you apply for a license.
  • Complete 50 hours of supervised driving practice --10 hours must be completed at night.
  • Provide a parent's signature on his or her instruction permit stating teenager completed all the driving practice outlined in the Parent-Teen Training Aide.
  • Obtain your parents' or guardians' signatures on the application form
  • Pass the behind-the-wheel driving test.

14) Do I need to take Driving Classes in order to take my driving test?
Yes, if you are under 18 years of age. But in order to take Driver's Training Behind the Wheel Classes, you must obtain a Learner’s Permit.

15) What is a Provisional Driver's License?
  • A Driver’s License issued by the DMV places restrictions on the license:
    • During the first 6 months after being licensed, teenager must be accompanied by a driver 25 years of age or older if teenager is driving between the hours of midnight and 5 a.m. or if teenager is transporting people under age 20. 
    • Teenager may drive alone with provisional license, as long as teenager has not been involved in accidents or have traffic violations.

16) What happens after the first 6 months?
  • During the second 6 months, after teenager has been licensed, teen must be accompanied by a driver 25 years of age or older if teenager is driving between the hours of midnight and 5 a.m.
  • However, you may transport passengers under age 20 without supervision between the hours of 5 a.m. and midnight.

17) Do my parent's have to know that I am getting a driver's license?
  • Yes if you are under 18 years of age and they must sign the application form.
  • They also have the ability to have the DMV cancel your license until you turn 18 years old.

18) What about Car Insurance. I do not own a car, do I need to be insured in order to drive?
  • Yes, California state law requires that licensed drivers and vehicle owners carry auto insurance with the following monetary limits:
    • $15,000 for Injury or death of 1 person per accident
    • $30,000 for injury or death of 2 or more persons per accident
    • $5,000 for property damage per accident
  • Evidence of financial responsibility must be carried at all times in the vehicle. Most Californians maintain financial responsibility through insurance companies, which provide the policy holder with an identification card as evidence of coverage. The card must state the insurance company's name and address, the period of coverage and policy number.
